Invisible fake watches and invisible trade negotiations – coming to a street corner near you soon. While it’s been reported that you can easily find a fake brand name watch in a street booth in Chinatown – that’s becoming less visible. The fake watch trade is worldwide – and notably situated in places like China, Mexico…and Dubai. Yes, even Dubai is reported to be getting in the act. The big designers – like Cartier and Rolex – have active “sweep and clear” programs to deal with fake Cartier and fake Rolex watches.
For this reason, the street trade in these fake watches has become largely invisible. If a customer wants the item, they must usually ask for it. Usually it is kept hidden and out of sight to avoid getting busted by the big designers. Hence the reason that the trade is becoming invisible. This is actually the goal of the big designers – to keep the fake watches out of your eyesight. You can’t see them – but they are still there.
Also, to combat this, the USA, the European Community and many other countries have been negotiating the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Act. Unfortunately, like the fake trade, these talks have been largely invisible. Ironic. (It has taken the efforts of Wikileaks to reveal details of these very secretive negotiations). Secret negotiations usually mean somebody has something to hide. Could it be that these talks are merely a means to tax or otherwise subject the industry to large fines?
Will that watch you’re looking to buy carry some extra large tax because of all this secrecy? Well, we hate to seem paranoid – but maybe so. Perhaps they’ll institute a license system for your watch like they do for TV’s in England. Or perhaps laws will be passed to require RFID chips placed in all watches. Excuse me sir, does your watch have a license or an RFID chip? Sound paranoid now?
